After the check out we had to mingle again in the absolutely hopeless traffic jam. Our first stop was at the Taman Safari 1 in the south of Bogor. First we had a ride in a bus through te safaripark. Impressive! We were lucky to be able to make a picture of a 2 day old mini-hippo. But we didn't yet find that sufficient: we did it over again on elepant's back. We had to adjust to the pace of an ambler but we wouldn't have missed this. We skipped the camel ride though. Afterwards we visited the young born animals; of course we made pictures with the boys and some animals. Sometimes it was hard to tell who was who;-) We continued our voyage through the Puncak pass. I hoped to find the spot on which Imy brother and were photographed by my father some 54 years ago. Alas, the road had changed beyond recognition but at some plausible spot I made some
pictures. Afterwardswe had a meall in what looked like an orginal indonesian restaurant. The food was good but it lacked the typical Indonesian atmosphere (only Europeans were having their meal there). As we approached Bandung the traffic got heavier and heavier so it lasted four hours untill we reached the Savoy Homann Hotel. A beatiful late Art Deco styled builing (designed by the famous architect Albert F. Aalbers) and dito interior at the Jalan Asia-Africa (the former Grote Postweg), the road named after the great Asian-African conference in 1955 of which the participants were roomed by Homann. The rooms appear to be excellent a prima vista; the internet speed is dissappointing. We tried to find a restaurant on tripadvisor. According to US comments the restaurant 'Queen' served great local food; but it was a Chinese restaurant run by ' peranakan' (China-Indo mix). R with his navigation found another exclusive restaurant Atmosphere (that it had indeed) that served local as well as western dishes. I had a nasi campur Bali, I enjoyed it very much. For the average traveller that will be too spicy. What struck me was the large number of lids of the sewers that were broke, missing or removed. Apparently nobody gives a xxxx but those holes were large enough for an adult to dissapear in. In Bandung we hope to see the tea plantations, vulcanes, and an Anklung (bamboo-instrument) concert, the zoo, a pasar (local market) and (my brother sould be able to translate it) to the Taman Lalu Lintas (just for a picture). That means a very early rise in the morning so I'm going to bed early. Till next time. Hope to get some pics on the net then. Salam manis

You were in Buitenzorg! Did you in fact leave your cares outside? :-)) Can't wait to see the pictures. Will get my dose of good Indo food in a bit over two weeks now; you are doing a good job of "priming" me for that! Thanks for the history lessons.

ik geniet van jullie verhaal elke dag, tussen het werk door! prachtig, al ken ik indonesie zelf niet.
eten jullie ook eens bij een goede chinees ( tew chew restaurant), is een aparte keuken van mijn moedersfamilie, heb je helaas niet in NL.
Betty, zojuist terug van crematie van Mariska Hahn, 12/7. Het was overvol, ze was pas 54. mooie ceremonie.

Nog even een kleine aanvulling van mij. Aan het reisverslag van C. kan ik niet zoveel toevoegen; het safariperk was inderdaad erg leuk. En op die olifantenrug was echt spectaculair ondanks het toeristisch gehalte. Niet erg comfortabel trouwens, je wordt hopeloos door elkaar geschud. Waarschijnlijk omdat die beesten telgangers zijn, zo wist onze wandelende encyclopedie (C. voor wie dat nog niet wist) te vertellen.
Bandung is niet echt een mooie stad, groot, druk, hier en daar nog wat mooie oude gebouwen die vooral vervallen zijn en nogal wat rotzooi op straat. Over die ontbrekende putdeksels heb ik me ook erg lopen verbazen. Je kijkt in een peilloos diep zwart gat (het riool?) en vooral in het donker zijn ze levensgevaarlijk. C. zei dat hij nu wel begreep hoe dat met al die verdwenen kinderen zit.
Over onze gids kan ik melden dat hij zeer vriendelijk en bescheiden is en ook een tikkeltje oosters ondoorgrondelijk. Als hij het oneens zou zijn met iets wat wij willen of het onverstandig zou vinden (zeer hypothetisch dus) dan zal hij dat niet rechtstreeks zeggen maar dan heeft hij wel zo zijn eigen manieren om ons bij te sturen. Kortom, een echte Aziaat dus. Ik vind het erg leuk om zijn manier van doen zo van nabij te kunnen gade te slaan. Daarnaast is hij een prima gids (nog een wandelende encyclopedie :-) en er steeds op uit het ons naar de zin te maken. Met onze chauffeur hebben we niet zoveel contact doordat hij nauwelijks Engels spreekt, maar ook hij is heel vriendelijk en -niet onbelangrijk- een uitstekend chauffeur, we voelen ons prima op ons gemak bij hem in de auto. Al met al is het een heerlijke, luxe manier van reizen zo met gids en chauffeur.
Luitjes, ik ga stoppen en gauw slapen, morgen weer een nieuwe dag in dit fascinerende land.
