The next day

This time my report in English. Today we had our first full day in Jakarta. We visited the Sunda Kelapa and the old kota where Jan Pieterszoon Coen founded Batavia (later to become Jakarta). Sunda Kelapa was a port for sailing clippers, built by the Portuguese (of which Jan PC took the most advantage). In the old town I was impressed by the house of mrs Kartini. She lived in Rebong, close to Semarang. Her beautifully decorated house made of jati (Java teak) covered with artisanal woodcarvings. That house was moved to this place (which is strange; usually people move, not houses). We strolled a bit further through the oldest part of Jakarta and ended up in restaurant Batavia. A restaurant that has welcomed in the past all kind of celebrities, people like James Dean to Churchill. The whole place still bears the exact same atmosphere as before WW2. (Thank you for the suggestion, Leo). After that we went to MONAS, the national monument. In the basement there are a lot of diorama's, depicting the Indonesian history from the stone age up to modern times. It was very instructive for that part of the Dutch history (shared with Indonesia) is not described very accurately in the Dutch history books. The same goes for the diorama's but an adversarial apprach never can do any harm. A curious woman asked me where I came from. Without realizing it, I answered her " Dari Belanda", so in Bahasa. Before returning to the hotel and enjoying the swimmingpool, we did some shopping and had a meal in an warung. This evening we will look for a warung here we can have our dinner.One of my goals - visiting Taman Prasasti Museum - appeared to be a 'mission impossible' for all museums are closed on monday. But "I'll be back" next month when I return for ANRI (national archive). Tomorrow we'll head for Bogor; on the way we will visit Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, a depiction of all 57 (I believe) regions with their way of life and culture.
Salam manis dari Jakarta

Nog even een stukje van het vrouwelijk deel van het gezelschap.

Wat een lawaaiige en chaotische stad is Jakarta. Het verkeer is een gekkenhuis, ik zou er nooit durven autorijden. Maar vreemd genoeg is het op een bepaalde manier ook relaxed; als je maar duidelijk aangeeft wat je wilt dan houdt men rekening met je en kun je de raarste manoeuvres uithalen zonder dat dit agressief getoeter of gescheld tot gevolg heeft, zoals in Nederland. Over de zeilhaven (loopplanken van 25 cm breed waarover alle vracht naar en van de boot wordt gebracht) en de oude stad (vooral vervallen en vergane glorie, maar cafe Batavia was leuk Leo!) heeft C alverteld. Iets vermakelijks bij het nationaal monument was dat J op een gegeven moment werd belaagd door schoolmeisjes die vroegen of zij met hem op de foto mochten ('he has a good face, miss', zei eentje tegen mij). J bleef er tamelijk stoicijns onder. Morgen gaan we verder naar Bogor, ik verheug mij vooral op de botanische tuin en de orchideeenkas.
